About Us
The Pigeon
We’ve all heard their song. We’ve all seen the stains of their excrement on our cars. We’ve all probably had one wreak havoc in our house. However, here at UAL, we champion new perspectives and open minds. So, we welcome UAL’s first-ever student newspaper, The Pigeon.
Named after the carrier pigeons of old, The Pigeon intends to connect UAl’s six campuses and unite our opinions, values and identities. We are for students, by students.
We publish print editions twice a semester and online regularly. We are based primarily at LCC, but our print copies are available across all campus libraries and cafes.
Our content is independently sourced and not controlled by UAL or Arts SU.
History
The Pigeon was founded by Marianne Carney & Harry Turnbull in 2025. Joining UAL the same year as master’s students, the pair had worked together on their previous student newspaper, The Badger Newspaper, at the University of Sussex. Upon arrival, Marianne and Harry were stunned to find that the second-best arts and design university in the world (QS World University Rankings for Art and Design 2025) had no student publication. So they decided to start one themselves.
Before The Pigeon, there is Artefact, which was founded in 2014 by UAL’s Programme Director of Journalism and Publishing Simon Hinde, and continues to this day. Artefact is contributed to by journalism students as part of their BA and MA courses.
